Ass

I woke up with the familiar throbbing head and desperate urge to drink a bathtub of water without the energy to move from my bed, that I had come to associate with a successfully night.

I felt stirring next to me and opened my eyes to a nest of fiery hair. That was going to be a problem. What was her name again? Did I even get her name? Yes… I remembered Abby introducing us. Abby had been consistently introducing me to people since that strange night a few months ago.

I rolled to the side of the bed, battling the nausea that filled my mouth with salty water. I wouldn’t need to remember her name if I got out of here before she woke up. I gently, very gently, untangled my legs from the covers and pressed them to the floor; testing how much weight I could push onto them before my body decided enough was enough.

My brain felt like it was trying to push through mud and each movement sent a pulse of agony piercing through it. Even so, I gingerly managed to find my feet and squinted through the darkness at a hallway past the foot of the bed. I shuffled, my gait somewhere between sneaking and stumbling, towards this beacon of freedom with what I hoped were my clothes bundled into my arms.

As I stepped into the hallway, my brain engaged enough to notice another open door to my left: a bathroom. Painfully slowly, I calculated my options. I could raid her medicine cabinet for painkillers, grab some water and purge myself of the contents of my stomach and then leave – probably feeling much better, or I could stumble out the door now without any risk of her waking up while I was preparing myself.

The necessity to take on a semblance of humanity won out and I ducked into the bathroom. Fortunately, it seemed to be exactly the same layout as my own one, letting my brain mostly proceed on autopilot for the task at hand.

By the time I was dressed and ready to bolt, things weren’t looking so dire. My head still felt like someone was playing it like a drum, and my thoughts were still mired in the sticky residue of too much alcohol, but otherwise I was alive.

I looked in the mirror before leaving, having to lean slightly to see my entire self. My designer shirt had been damaged at some point the night before, leaving sharp creases in a web across the whole thing, even as it was pulled taut across my pecs, and was that a missing button? I didn’t need to style my short brown hair too much; enough product had stayed in it to allow me to sweep it back with my hands to get that “effortless” look. In this light, with the web of blood vessels so prominent, my eyes somehow looked more green than blue.

I slipped out of the bathroom, steadier on my feet than when I entered. Before opening the front door, I took one last look at the ginger body in the bed. She was covered enough to leave something to the imagination, an imagination I had to engage as my memory of last night was fairly patchy, but from what I could see; I was impressed with myself. Her shoulders and chest were freckled, and her breasts looked full and thick, causing a deep memory to stir within me of a similar pair that belonged to my best friend’s girlfriend. I shook my head to clear it and stepped out of the door.

Opposite me, I saw the lumbering form of one of my neighbours, staggering through the hallway in a similar state to myself. As if pulling my thoughts through honey, I turned back to the door I had stepped out of and looked at the number. Shit.

“You’re such a dickhead,” Jess laughed at me, throwing a pillow at my head. “So, what? You’ve just left her there?”

I nodded meekly, “Yeah… But at least Carl’s there, right?”

After realising my error, I’d been too embarrassed to re-enter the room I shared with my best friend, and roommate, Carl. In my semi-cognizant state, I’d decided to walk the fifteen-ish minutes to Abby’s place to get the info on my mystery guest. Depending on what I found out, I could return to her with a coffee from the local Costa, as if nothing had happened.

It turns out that Abby had not returned from her own night out and so only her flatmate, Jess, was in when I came calling. Jess, who was also my best friend’s long-term girlfriend. Jess, who, even at this ungodly hour on a Sunday morning looked as if she hadn’t, in fact, just woken up, but had actually just had a professional stylist do her hair and makeup.

She sat across from me, holding a steaming cup of coffee that mirrored my own, in grey jogging bottoms and an oversized tee-shirt that almost managed to hide the wonders within. Almost. Her long bleached blonde hair was tied back into a ponytail that hung down over her shoulder, contrasting with her lightly tanned skin and cool blue eyes.

“I still can’t believe you brought a girl back while Carl was in!” Jess snapped. “I hope you didn’t give him an eyeful.”

I frowned. I couldn’t really remember much about the night before. I don’t remember Carl being there, and I didn’t see him this morning… But I wasn’t in the fittest state.

“It’s Ankara escort nothing he hasn’t seen before,” I responded quietly.

“I’m not talking about you. I don’t want my man looking at someone else in that situation without my approval!”

‘Without my approval’, this was a something new. Carl had been scared that he wasn’t giving Jess the ‘college experience’, so Abby and I had tried to help by initiating a little bit of group sex one night. Nothing that could be considered cheating, just two couples having sex in the same room. It wasn’t my fault that things had escalated slightly…

It did appear to help them. It also gave me an eternity of wanking material in seeing Jess, my personification of a sex goddess, doing what sex goddesses did. It also ignited an enviousness of Carl that I hadn’t known was possible.

The Jess I had known from before that night would not have appended ‘without my approval’.

“I didn’t know he was there!” I protested. “He was as quiet as a mouse this morning; I didn’t even notice him.”

“Well, I’ll be seeing him in a little while and I’ll be able to tell whether he got an eyeful or not, don’t you worry. So maybe you should get back to Nikki with an apology and breakfast,” Jess said, standing suddenly.

Nikki! That was it! I knew it.

“Kicking me out, are you?”

“Actually, yes. I’ll see you later,” she grabbed the cup from my hands and inclined her head to the door.

“Fine!” I said, rising. “Thank Abby for me, would you.”

I smiled down at her, expecting a retort, before realising that standing had brought us to within centimetres of one-another.

Jess stumbled backwards, “Yeah… Of course… Go on.”

She didn’t look up at me as I walked past her, and I noticed that her cheeks seemed to be pinker than usual.

“Bye then!” I called, stepping back out into the fresh air.

***

Fortunately, by the time I returned home; Carl was awake and managed to let me back in without Nikki even stirring. He grinned at me and shook his head as he left the room to let me deal with the mess I’d made. She was extremely grateful for the coffee and although she said she needed to leave in a hurry, made time to show her appreciation before she left.

No sooner had the door shut behind her, then it re-opened to my roommate’s blank face, “Really? I’ve got things to do today, mate.”

“What?” I grinned in response, pulling my trousers back up.

“You know what!” He said in a strained voice, before smiling. “Although I wouldn’t have minded seeing her in the daylight…”

“You perv,” I chuckled. “Oh… Err, don’t let Jess know you saw anything. I don’t know what she’ll do to me if she finds out.”

Carl’s eyebrow raised and he tilted his head, “You don’t think she’ll do worse to me?”

“Nah, you’re her boyfriend. She’ll go easy on you…”

He just shook his head at that and went into the bathroom.

When he came back out a little while later, he had a towel wrapped around his waist, but was otherwise only clothed in the water he hadn’t dried off. His black hair was slicked back onto his head instead of hanging over his face as it usually did, exposing his brown eyes fully to the light of the room; flecks of gold catching in it.

His snow pale body, usually a little loose, seemed tighter than I’d last seen it and I could actually make out the faint outline of his abs under the pouch of his stomach.

“You been working out?” I asked in shock.

A blush crept up his face as he shot back, “Why are you eye-fucking me?”

“I’m not. Just couldn’t help noticing, as I’ve been trying to get you to come to the gym with me for years,” I couldn’t help chuckling.

“Yeah…” He sighed, walking over to his bed to rifle through a pile of clothing. “Well, Jess has been making me go jogging and stuff with her now and then.”

“I’m hurt,” I said, falling back onto my bed to emphasise the point. “All I needed was a pussy to help you unleash your potential.”

He swore at me and continued getting dressed.

After Carl left, I couldn’t bring myself to go to the gym; my body was still suffering enough from the night before to give me an excuse not to get up. Most of my friends were either busy, studying, or in the case of Abby: ignoring me, so I spent the rest of the day chilling out.

***

The following morning, I woke up to frantic knocking on the door. When I opened it, my bleary eyes took a few seconds to register what I was seeing.

Looking up at me with dark eyes somewhere between green and brown from a face the colour of caramel, was a girl with brown and red curly hair.

“Are you alone? Did I just wake you up, Sam?” Came a question from her soft, plump lips.

“Ungh?” I eloquently replied. “Abby?”

She smiled brightly, pushing past me, “That’s a ‘yes’ to both of those questions then.”

I turned around to see her opening my curtains. I shielded my eyes and let out an involuntary groan.

“It’s Ankara escort bayan ten in the fucking morning, Sam,” she chided. “You should be up!”

“As you can see, I am technically up.”

Her eyes flicked down my body and she blushed, “Yes, I can see that.”

I felt myself redden and instinctively moved my hands to cover the tent being pitched in my shorts.

“That’s not what I meant…” I stuttered out.

She simply cocked an eyebrow at me as I shook my head.

“I’ll go get us a coffee,” she rolled her eyes. “Sort yourself out. I’ll see you in a bit.”

She marched straight past me and out the door again, flicking the handle so it wouldn’t lock. I stood confused for a moment, deciding if it was worth risking having hot coffee thrown over me if she came back to find me in bed. I decided it wasn’t and entered the bathroom instead.

By the time I stepped back into the bedroom, still damp from the shower, Abby was sitting on my bed with an enormous sports mug of brown liquid.

“I’m not here to fuck, big boy, so why don’t you put that away?” She inclined her chin at my naked body.

“Hey, you’re the one who burst in on me. I can be naked in my own home. It’s nothing you ain’t seen before.”

She took a sip of the drink and rolled her eyes again, “I got one for you too. Not sure whose cups these are though.”

I glanced to the counter to my right, seeing another cup of coffee steaming away.

“Thanks,” I said, kneeling next to her to look for clothes under my bed. “I see you went for the classic swimming pool of coffee for that extra caffeine.”

She laughed, “Yeah. Everyone seems to have one of these mugs, but I never did. I was excited to see what all the fuss was about.”

She was oddly quiet then, not saying another thing while I dressed and took a seat on Carl’s bed opposite her, coffee in hand.

“So…” I began, looking at her inquisitively.

“I needed to get away from them,” she said, tilting her head at Carl’s bed. “All they do is argue and fuck.”

“What? Really? I thought we’d helped them?”

“Yeah. Well… No,” she said, taking a sip that didn’t seem to decrease the volume of coffee in her cup. “Things seemed better for a while after that night. Jess stopped complaining and, I’m guessing from your reaction that, Carl hasn’t said anything.”

I shook my head as she carried on.

“They are the perfect couple whenever they are with people, or out, or doing anything. It’s actually disgusting. But the second they get into the bedroom, it starts again.”

“So, it’s purely a sex thing again?”

“I don’t know. Jess hasn’t said anything specific to me, and what I’ve overheard isn’t really explicit.”

“Maybe they’re just roleplaying?”

Abby exhaled a short laugh and shook her head, “It did work at first. Jess was absolutely glowing for a few weeks after our night together. I thought she might even ask me to join them now and then, but no… Then just over a month ago they started getting ‘theatrical’; The noises that were coming from Jess’ room were massively exaggerated.”

She took another sip of her drink and looked into it for several seconds.

“A few weeks ago, they started having shouting matches between the fucking,” Abby scowled. “Like Jess is having the orgasm of her life, and then ten seconds later Carl’s shouting at her for it, or she’s berating him. I can’t make out everything they’re saying, but it doesn’t sound healthy.”

“Should we help them again?” I asked, a spark of hope igniting in the back of my mind.

“Pftt, no,” she spat out the word. “I just don’t think it’s going to work between them anymore. There’s something incompatible about them. I think I was right before, and Jess needs more than Carl can give. Even if they’re happy the rest of the time.”

I gripped my cup tighter, feeling a knot of anguish in my stomach. I don’t know if Carl could recover from a breakup; Jess was way out of his league, and he’d find that out if she dumped him.

“What about us?” I asked. “It feels weird between us. We’ve not been together since that night.”

“This isn’t about us,” she replied quickly. “We’re just friends. Fucking was an added bonus and we’ve both been seeing other people recently.”

“Yeah, well if Carl and Jess break up then I don’t think he’s going to want us all hanging out…”

She shrugged, “Then maybe we need to stop seeing each other so much.”

“Ouch,” her words were almost like a physical blow.

“I don’t know why I came here, and I don’t know why I told you all that,” she said, standing sharply.

“Because we’re friends, like you just said?” I retorted sharply.

“Fuck,” she swore. “Everything’s fucking confusing now. I need to fucking study too. I have exams soon.”

She walked to the counter and placed her cup down before turning to face me. She smiled, but her eyes looked watery and bloodshot. I stood up to embrace her, feeling powerless to help more, but she put her hand out.

“I Escort Ankara have to go. Have a word with Carl, please?” She said, walking to the door.

“Stay? Or we can go to the library together?” I pleaded.

She exhaled a humourless chuckle, “Do you even know where the library is? No, I’m fine. I’ll talk to you later. I’m just stressed.”

She closed the door behind her, leaving me to stare at the wooden surface.

My mind was reeling at everything that had just happened. It wasn’t even midday and I felt like I’d been up all day and night suddenly. Carl and Jess were fucked, Abby and I suddenly seemed fucked, and I felt helpless.

When Carl arrived home that evening, he seemed absolutely normal, not like someone who was on the verge of losing the love of his young life at all.

“Alright, mate?” He greeted me as he took off his shoes.

“Alright,” I responded automatically.

We chatted shit while I let him get in, get a drink, and sit down on his bed.

I couldn’t handle it anymore, so got straight to the point, “How’s Jess?”

“She’s alright,” Carl smiled, with no hint of any other emotion on his face. “Might need a new bed next term though, know what I’m saying?”

I laughed politely, “Yeah, so you’ve been all good since that night then?”

“That night?” He asked, his face slowly morphing from amused puzzlement to suspicion as he realised what I was talking about. “Yes. Thank you.”

“I’m glad,” I smiled tightly, knowing that he had shut down and wouldn’t respond to my probing now.

“Zach and Jim were out there,” he gestured to the door. “I’m going to join them, I think, if you want to come.”

“Maybe in a bit,” I said, watching him grab a bottle of something from our fridge, and marching to the door.

He had been drunk when he confessed to their issues before. Maybe I just needed to talk to him when he had a bit more liquid courage powering him. I stood, moving to the cooler; maybe I should go and encourage him.

***

A few hours later and it looked as though Carl was well on his way to opening up. When I’d joined them in the shared area of the floor, they had been doing shots to celebrate Jim’s last piece of coursework being handed in just in time, and with Carl’s additional bottle of liquor added to the mix, the drinking only accelerated.

Jim lived a few doors long from us. He was short, almost as pale as Carl, with long blonde hair and glasses. He was extremely friendly and seemed to have all sorts of arcane knowledge stored in his head. He was taking a course to do with IT or something.

I knew Zach better. He lived next door to us, and I’d frequently bump into him on the campus gym. I didn’t know what course he was doing, but it had some overlap with Jess’s as they knew each other through some mutual classes. Zach was shorter than I, but equally muscular, if not even more so. He was a foreign lad, with cropped dark hair, dark eyes, and skin the colour of rich mahogany.

Jess had told me Zach had tried chatting her up in class a few times, and I’d seen Jim gluing his eyes to her the few occasions we’d all been in the same place, so it was easy enough to push the conversation towards Jess and, by extension, Carl’s relationship with her.

“Dude, you should bring her around here more,” Zach said in his loud nasal accent, slapping Carl on the back with enough enthusiasm to knock him forward. “We’ll look after her for you.”

“Fuck you, man,” Carl laughed. “You’d ‘look after’ any woman who looked your way, and Jim… Well…”

“Hey!” Jim laughed. “What are you saying?”

“You’re wrong, mate,” I chuckled. “I’ve seen Zach trying to hit on girls at the gym and well… Have you ever heard any noises coming from his room?”

“You can’t hear them over the sounds of your own fucking every night,” Zach gestured between me and Carl with his cup.

“Wait, you mean he is with Jess, but he is still getting it elsewhere every night?” Jim exclaimed. “What is wrong with you, Carl?”

“You’ve got it all wrong,” I said slowly, sipping my drink. “Carl’s over at Jess’s house every night, so the noises you’re hearing from our room is me taking all the girls you fail to pick up.”

Zach laughed uproariously at that, although Jim just looked confused.

“All I’m saying, is that I bet she’s more than you can handle on your own,” Zach said, still laughing.

Carl kept smiling, but his face had a strained edge to it now.

“Say what you want, but she’s still mine,” he shrugged.

“He is just messing around, Carl,” Jim interjected. “We are just jealous that you have a girlfriend that is so incredibly out of our league.”

“I hope your ‘our’ doesn’t include me,” I laughed, before Carl could react. “Right, it’s Sunday and I have a lecture tomorrow so I’m going to bed.”

I got up and gave them a cursory wave as I walked towards my room, exaggerating my sway to make it seem I was drunker than I really was.

“Yeah, I should go too,” I heard Carl say.

“Fine, don’t keep me up all night, lovebirds,” guffawed Zach.

“Goodnight,” came Jim’s voice as I walked along the corridor.

By the time I entered our room, Carl had caught up with me.

“I swear,” Carl began, closing the door behind him. “If Zach keeps talking about Jess like that…”
